Yes. The book manuscript will always remain your work and the original work will always remain in your name and ownership.

What should I be aware of when formatting my book files?

We review the interior and cover files for your book during the proof printing process. Due to our unique printing model, common issues that may cause book file rejections and/or delays during the printing process include:

Minimum and Maximum Page Counts

The minimum page count for all books is 18 pages. The maximum page count is 1050.

Author/Title Names Must Match

The author name(s) and book title you enter in the title setup must match the exact author name(s) and book title displayed on the cover file and interior file (if applicable).

Pagination

The interior file should be submitted as a single PDF with one book page per PDF page with appropriate pagination. Please keep in mind that PDF page one will print as a right facing page. We therefore recommend adjusting the pagination so that the text begins on a right facing page.

Live Elements

Due to our printing model, we are unable to accept files that have text bleeding off the page. All text and images that appear to be intended to be read must be within 0.5 " from the trim lines.

We recommend reviewing our submission requirements for additional information.

Fonts and Images

All fonts and images must be embedded in your PDF file prior to submission.

Missing Bleed

Cover files must have at least .25” bleed on all sides. We recommend reviewing our submission requirements for additional information.

Image Resolution

We recommend all images have a resolution of a 600 dpi for 1- bit black & white line art. 300 dpi for 8-bit grayscale continuous tone images.

Encryption

We cannot accept any locked or encrypted PDFs.

Crop Marks

Crop marks or other printer’s marks should not be used on any files.

Book Building FAQ

What is a pen name? Do I need one?

Sometimes authors wish to go by a fictional name instead their own. Do you need to do this? The answer is no, if you wish to use your real name then go ahead!

Should my cover design file be RBG or CMYK?

All images in a cover file must be CMYK.

What dpi should my images be?

Images that are less than 300 dpi may be rejected for higher-resolution submissions. (resolutions this low are considered too low in quality for printing)

What CMYK values do we recommend?

We recommend a rich black with CMYK values = 60% Cyan / 40% Magenta / 40% Yellow / and 100% Black. CMYK total value should not exceed 240%. Elements should not be built in ‘Registration’ (100% of all colors). *Files sent with densities higher than 240% may be rejected for correction.

Do we support spot colors?

Spot colors are not supported, they can produce unexpected results during processing. Please convert all spot colors (PMS / PANTONE) with/without transparencies to CMYK, (even in supporting .eps files). *Note: RGB files received will be converted to CMYK before printing. RGB / spot color with/without transparency may produce unexpected color results when printing.

What are our PDF requirements?

Files must be PDF/X-1a:2001 or PDF/X-3:2002 compliant. The PDF/X-1a:2001 setting is found in the Professional versions of Adobe Acrobat 6 or above (listed as PDF/X-1a in Acrobat 6 Professional). The PDF/X-3:2002 setting is found in the Professional versions of Adobe Acrobat 7 or above.

What about the spine? Do I have to create it or submit anything for it?

No, FreeChristianPublishing.com will create your spine. The background will correspond with colors used on your cover. A basic font will be used that best matches the font used on your front cover. The FreeChristianPublishing.com logo will appear at the bottom of the spine.

What if my book has less than 80 pages?

Covers with a page count below 80 pages will not have text on the spine. A solid color will be used only that best corresponds with the colors used on your front cover.

Can I have color in my PDF?

For best results, all images should be converted to grayscale before submitting. Images submitted in a file as RGB or CMyK will be converted to grayscale when printing - this can sometimes cause a color shift. Any dissatisfaction with color shift will be the publisher’s responsibility to correct.

How much margin should I have in my PDF?

Please provide a minimum of 0.5” (13 mm) margin on all sides of your text block.

Is it alright if crop marks are still in my document?

No, Please DO NOT include crop / printer / registration marks in a file. Marks included in a file could show up in printed copies.

What about my page count?

The total page count should be divisible by 2. PLEASE NOTE: An advertising page for FreeChristianPublishing.com will be added to the back of the book. *The final page of all submissions must be completely blank and is reserved for a check printer barcode.

Will my photos turn out exactly as I submitted them?

We cannot guarantee your images will appear as you might expect—particularly photographic images. If your book contains graphics that are old, blurry, fuzzy, too dark or too light, please note that when they are printed in your book, they may not always reproduce well. There may also be some color variance between print runs.
